February is award season and coincidentally 1 year since I first launched my little blog, Style Lobster. So to mark to occasion and all I have learnt and discovered throughout my first year in the bloggersphere, I thought I would create a little ceremony by counting down my top favourite beauty products of 2014 and award them with a (“very coveted” LOLOLLOL) Beauty Lobster Award.
So without further ado let the (from now on) annual Beauty Lobster awards commence!
Best Foundation – Clarin’s Everlasting Foundation
This has to be the most frequently mentioned foundation on Style Lobster this year. I fell in love with this foundation because it was the first matte foundation I tried that didn’t dry out my skin and gave me a flawless, velvet matte finish with a “lit from within” glow. A fav forever.
Best Tinted Moisturiser – Guerlain BB Hydra +
This BB is a skin dream; containing a serum inside as well, this lightweight BB covers imperfections whilst creating a beautiful sheer glow across my face. It’s the perfect no makeup makeup, a quality product (as always from Guerlain) with endless skin benefits and a gorgeous fragrance to boot. This is everything a BB cream should be.
Best Concealer – Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage
No surprise that this one nabbed the top spot for concealer. With over 12 mentions/features on my blog alone this year I would be lost, red and blotchy without my favourite concealer palette. To think I almost returned this product out of frustration until I realised I was using it wrong! With the secret camouflage it is all in the skin prep, ladies. Kate Moss’ fav makeup product for a reason..
Best Brow Tool – Elizabeth Arden Brown Pencil in Brownette
2014 was the year of the brow pencil! Having been a die hard powder brow girl since brows went from brows to….BROWS, I ended up testing 6 different brow pencils this year and this one was not only the best of the bunch, but actually made me switch from my Benefit Browzings palette to the Brow Pencil in Brownette by Elizabeth Arden. I have just run out, cue the sad violin tune….
These pencil are silky smooth to apply, highly pigmented, have no red in them and have the perfect sized mini spooly on the end for brushing brows out. Pencil perfection.
Runner up – HD Brows Brow Gel
Favourite Lipstick – Charlotte Tilbury Love Liberty
There is nothing as beautiful, as glam, as lady like, as vixen, all rolled into one; ladies I give you Love Liberty Matte Revolution Lipstick by Charlotte Tilbury. It’s one of those shades you have never seen before and yet question why it has never been made until now. Suiting every skin tone, this gorgeous red berry hue with a slight pinky/brown undertone is the cherry everyone wants to have on their lips. The finish and formula is the best performing and comforting I have tried this year; a velvety matte packed with Shea butter that hugs the lip, presented in her signature rose gold casing. A clear favourite from 2014 that I will re buy forever. Congrats on creating something utterly unique and timeless at the same time CT.
Favourite Mascara – Code Beautiful Mascara
I tried several very, very good mascaras this year and I really did struggle to choose my fav, but when it came down to weighing up performance, brush and formula the winner was new-to-the-scene Code Beautiful Mascara. This oil infused mascara treats lashes kindly whilst coating them in a luscious black formula, hugging and volumising every lash. This product gives me the volume I want at the root and the brush works perfectly when manipulating the product around to create the best set of falsies. I like that the inkiness of this product is still going strong 6 month after opening.
Runner up – Benefit They’re Real
Best Newly Brand 2014 – Makeup Revolution
Make up snobs get ready to be duped! 2014 saw the very loud and attention grabbing launch of Makeup Revolution. With its no nonsense packaging and value prices, this is the cosmetic brand that over delivers on formula and performance without breaking the bank.
Queen of dupes, MR unashamedly released a version of every cult, premium makeup product you wanted last year but couldn’t afford. Think all the Urban Decay Naked Palettes, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders and Limecrime velvet lipsticks….all for a fraction of the price but with the same performance. Invest is the wrong word to use here….HAUL!
A revolution by name and a revolution by nature.
Best Bronzer – Rouge Bunny Brownzing Glow Powder in Goldcombe Bay
This is the first year I have ever used bronzer all year round and that is because I fell for Bronzing Glow Powder in Goldcombe Bay. When I first tired this colour I thought it would be way too light to even make a difference to my skin colour but the results were so pretty, so natural and fresh, that I realised I had been using the wrong shade of bronzer for years. Girls with pale skin like me aren’t well catered for in the bronzer market. We often end up muddying our complexions with shades way too dark, when really a nice toasty powdering of Goldcombe Bay gives your face life and health in the way a bronzer should.
Rogue Bunny’s formula is smooth and hydrating with a subtle shimmer which is practically unnoticeable on the skin.
Best Blush – Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Cream Blush
In the spirit of switching things up, 2014 was also the year that I decided I actually quite liked cream blushes – if they came in little tortoise shell pots with the words Bronze Goddess stamped on them, that is. This beautiful cream blush is limited edition and only came in one colour and I’m so glad I got one! The perfect hue – a deep red rose colour this has a glow highlighter infused into the formula which looks perfect dabbed onto the apples of my cheeks when I need an injection of glowy cheek colour. It creates a naturally flushed cheek that works so well with the matte foundation trend that dominated 2014.
Runner Up – Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic
Favourite Highlighting product – Topshop Glow Pot Highlighter in Gleam
A little pot of delight, this glow-y champagne gel pot is the perfect highlighting product. Initially drawn to how pretty the colour was (not too pink, not to yellow) I then delighted in the lovely gel like formula that is so easily blended with your other liquid makeups and is the perfect highlight accent for eyes cheekbones and cupids bow. Favourite Eye Palette – Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette
Apologies for the obvious entry winner here guys but this really was the year when everyone obsessed over the Naked Palettes, in particularly the Naked 3 which is a nude-y pink based palette of 12 eyeshadows with a rather awesome brush. I found this palette to be the one most reached for this year hence why it steals the crown! A little pricey at £38, however cost per wear currently sits around the 20p mark….
Runner up: Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp
I blogged about this bad boy tan here. Lasts ages so you don’t have to re do all the time which is the biggest reason, until now, I never bothered to fake tan. Life changer, that is all.
Don’t forget to hop over to the Lipcote Facebook page where they are giving away a lipstick everyday this week and a special pamper package for 2 at Guys & Dolls Salon.
