There are a million and one ways to apply a foundation in an industry constantly reinventing the wheel. Whether you are partial to a pump with brush application method, use your fingers from a pot of product or are a slave to your beauty blender everyone has a method they love and works for them.
This year the world of foundation as I knew it got turned on it’s head and I started questioning my routine. Queue: The Cushion Foundation Revolution!
There is a huge beauty buzz about cushion foundations right now, it seems every big beauty brand is launching a new product into their foundation offerings.
Why do I like them?
Although a cushion foundation, for the most part, will seem bulky (I’ve found that the product to packaging ratio is off massively) there is something really handy about having both applicator and product tucked into the same vessel, no need to pack the foundation brush for weekends away! Also I’ve always been “anti” the tools that come, as standard, with any makeup product, preferring to invest more in better makeup brushes. The way these formulations are made means that their sponge/puff companions are the perfect applicators.
How to apply
All the formulations I’ve tried so far are lightweight, gliding, smooth with buildable coverage. Basically, foundation formulations of the future! Build the coverage up as much as you like whilst retaining a very sporty and fresh, glowing complexion but don;t forget to dust over some powder for longevity.
Drugstore Pick – L’Oreal Cushion Nude Magique Foundation
I cannot fault this product for delivery of fresh, glowing and beautifully natural coverage. It creates amazing skin every time I use it. You will still need a concealer if you want to “do a full face of makeup” as this doesn’t do much to cover imperfections. Its basically a your skin but the perfect version so I tend to use a concealer paste (like Amazing Concealer) only where I want to hide imperfections. I found this product ran out pretty quickly, but my pro hack would be flip the sponge once it looks like it’s running out and you’ve got another few weeks left!
The One That Changed My Mind – Pür Cosmetics Air Perfection CC Compact Cushion Foundation
This product is awesome! It not only lasts longer than the other two but comes with an additional refill cartridge. The longevity is about 30% better than the L’Oreal one but you won’t sacrifice the glow-factor with this. Truly lust-worthy skin! The only down side? The ugly packaging. I believe they are re-branding next year though!
Luxe Pick – Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Cushion Foundation
This is fresh off the manufactures belt and Lancome’s 2nd cushion foundation launch. This option is the mattest of the 3 with a dry down that is more velvety radiance than glowy dewiness. The packaging is super luxe too but it has the highest price point. The formulation is quite long wearing and it meshes with the skin really nicely. I prefer how it looks a few hours after being on the skin though so a little more glow comes through!
