Hi, hello and welcome to my 2nd ever beauty round up of my most favourite products I have used, abused and loved this year. I also wanted to take the time to reflect a little of my online growth as a blogger. If you don’t care for the sentimental crap then skip to the next chapter.
The end of December marks a special time at stylelobster.com as it’s only a couple of months away from my 2 year anniversary as a proud contributor to the blogging community. Stylelobster.com started as a hobby; a little space to write about all my discoveries and tips on my passion for beauty and style. 2 years later I’m completely and utterly addicted to updating this little online space I have mapped out for myself. In the grand scheme of things I am still a relatively small blogger, but have amassed a loyal readership I am very grateful to have and rolling into 2016 marks a point of reflection for me.
As I started wracking my brains for my 2015 favs I look back to my best of 2014 and I am proud to see how far my tastes, writing and photography skills have progressed. It sort of makes me feel a little embarrassed and uncomfortable reading older posts like it would reading the diaries of my teenage self (other bloggers reading this may feel similar?). My finger hovers over the delete button often, but I always pull back. Deleting older posts would be erasing the proof of my journey to where I am now.
I would love to sit here an amass an encyclopedic list for you guys covering off every category of makeup & skincare there is. However, there is a new years eve party I must prep myself for. I have summarized below the products that have really stood out for me this year. Hope you like!
A bit of a latecomer to me was the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue tinted gel. This bad boy is in a league of its own when it comes to CC creams and knocked my old fav Chanel CC cream off the top spot. I have been using this religiously since I received from BM. Bliss on the skin. See it in action here.
Concealer is my best friend and I’m more likely to reach for a concealer than a base product for a daily face. Amazing Concealer in Golden Light is the most hardcore cover up concealer I’ve ever used without an smidgen of drying. It’s dewy on skin as well as an eraser for perfection. More on this here.
The best finishing powder was always a bit of a non-starter category until 1 week ago, when on a pre-xmas shopping spree I gifted myself the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim light. I have never enjoyed using powder until I started using this one as most settle into dry patches and create a matte look to the skin I’m not a fan of. But BOY has this changed the game. I know, I know I am so late to the ambient lighting party but whatev’s I’m here now.
Suqqu stole my heart with its delectable skin loving Creamy Makeup Base. This primer is a dream to use and didn’t clog up with skin but instead preps and hydrates ready for base. Read more here.
Best in Brow category saw me swapping from my Anastasia Powder Brow Duo and settle firmly into the pencil category. Smashbox Brow Tech To Go in Brunette is my fav brow product for everyday brow grooming. It volumises my brows and fills them in with ease. The formula glides on and mistakes are easily fixed. I love that it has a setting gel on the end with a small spooly for precision styling. If you’d like me to do a vlog on how I use this let me know in the comment section.
The Best Mascara was a no brainer for me and I know will feature heavily in many beauty round ups of 2015. Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara stole my heart whilst sexxing up my lashes. I feel like a proper lash expert when I use this product. It excels in the length, volume and styling depts with its two sided comb and thick yet glide-y formulation. Also, drugstore price – YAY.
My Liquid eyeliner winner from 2015 goes to the Burberry Eyes Effortless Liquid Liner in black. I have been creating foolproof cat eye flicks for several months with this ergonomically designed, pinpoint perfect, flexible nib.
Lipstick favs are an endless game when you start to dissect colour, longevity, comfort, texture etc. So for 2015 I am simply going to note my 2 most reached for daily lipsticks. In the matte category I fell hard for a dusky pink loveliness of MAC’s Mehr Lipstick. In the satin category I became addicted the Chanel Coco Rouge Adrienne Lipstick which is the perfect balance of comfort and colour.
As far as the Eyeshadow palette game goes in 2015 it was a toss up between the Naked Smokey Palette and the Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Palette. Both unsurprisingly are UD (I really need to branch out in 2016). In the end it came down to the most versatile of palettes as quality was on par. UD x Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette wins with its beautiful mix of neutrals and more vibrant smokey and jewels tones. Round of applause! For a quick tutorial on how I use this palette click here.
I felt the need to create the “Best Cream Eyeshadow” category as my most reached for eyeshadow this year has been the amazing MAC Pro Longwear paint pot in Groundwork. I own a few of these but Groundwork is a super on-trend, neutral brown hue that works with all eye colours. The formula is a slick creamy dream to apply with fingers or a brush. This is the most foolproof shadow formula I’ve ever used. I also use the shade Painterly for an allover eye base. A worthy investment at £13 a pot.
This is a toughy! As a mask junkie I discovered some incredible masks in 2015 but it was 2 that I tested in the later part of the year that really stole the show. An honourable mention to Soap & Glory’s No Clogs Allowed; an amazing refreshing pore cleaning mask which is also self heating, but I give the 1st spot to Antipodes Manuka Honey Mask for its amazing skin healing properties and moisturizing benefits. This mask does wonders for the skin. Get the low down here.
If you saw my Current Morning Skincare Routine over on youtube you’ll know how much I dig Sunday Riley’s Juno Face Oil. It solved all my skin woes and boy did I have a lot this year. For a full review head here.
After trialling a shit load of toners I did a full 360 and came back to my trusty Liz Earle Skin Tonic Spritzer. Refreshing, glow inducing, no stripping perfection.
I have to take a moment to mention my favourite haircare product of 2015. Wella SP Luxe Oil has been a staple of my hair care routine for the last 9 months. This is an resurrecting elixir like no other with extra points for having the most amazing smell I’ve ever smelt on a cosmetic. Yes, it smells better than anything you’ll find in Lush. This oil nourishes, repairs and smoothes out all my bleached frizz and makes styling so much easier. I love you Luxe Oil.
Rain, shine, summer or winter my Bumble & bumble Invisible Oil Primer spray has been an all-weather and heat styling protectant. I love how lightweight this product is and it protects during styling whilst softening and smoothing locks. More on that in my holiday essential line up.
The entire Fresh Cosmetics brand was a new discovery this year, but it was the lip balms that were the hero products for me. For more lip balm love go here.
Thoughts on my top picks? Are any of these gospel to you? Do share!
On a final note for the year thanks again to everyone who stops by and reads my ramblings. I really appreciate your time and comments, if you hang around to leave one 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful end to 2015 and see you in 2016! *pops champagne*
