Customisation is so hawt right now. I swear to god every other PR item I receive has my initials on it; MY JACKET, BAGS, SHOES, WORKOUT LEGGINGS, TOOTHBRUSH, HELL, EVEN MY TANNING MITT IS PERSONALISED! That or LOBSTERS! HAHA. I’m not complaining everyone likes things that are bespoke to them ☺
So what could be more personal and bespoke than a woman’s skincare routine? I love to switch mine up depending on my skins needs. It’s also a seasonal thing, weather and environment dependant.
The clever people at Bio Extracts have come up with an affordable and really VERY logical approach to personalised skincare and meeting your needs depending on how you skin is looking and feeling that day. BUT I’ve got my eye on those products that end up being more fashionable faff than functional. Here’s how Bio Extracts held up…
Concept: Let’s strip this down
Everyone uses a moisturiser (I hope) and many view a serum and any additional beauty arsenal after that as optional extras. I’m a big believer in a multi-pronged approach to a skincare routine. Bio Extracts allows you to customise your skincare by first selecting your base cream (like a carrier) and then you select “Booster Serums” depending on your needs. You then boost your day cream (£27 for 30ml) with the serums (£19.50 for 10ml syringe) every time you use them therefore tailor making your own skincare everyday.
I’d imagine this would be great for a busy woman who wants to maximise her skincare regime with minimal steps and product purchasing.
So we know how it works but what does it do?
Bio Extracts was originally developed for sensitive skin types that need skin-kind emulsion-style formulations. This formula is more advanced than any water in oil or oil in water solution as it has a similar structure to the natural layers in the skin and mimics the skins own lamellar structure. It acts as a shield restoring barrier function and preventing water loss, improving hydration and protecting the skin from external irritants. Available in either Normal or Light.
It’s called The Lamellar System and it’s not complicated or unhygienic. The serums and cream come in the hi-tech airless jar and booster “syringes”.
The Pros at a glance
How I got on
I chose the LIGHT base cream instead of NORMAL, as I do need something slightly lighter in the summer months.
I selected the following boosters: Hydro, Glow, Anti Oxidant and Anti Wrinkle*
My day to day approach tended to be a squirt of Hydro and Glow to my cream in the morning to rehydrate and give my skin a great makeup base and a few squirts of Anti Oxidant and Anti Wrinkle for detox, repair and anti ageing during the night-time. The Hydro and Glow boosters were my most used as I sometimes added them to the nighttime recipe if I felt I needed even more hydration.
I think the Bio Extracts Lamellar System is a solid skincare brand and routine. At first I was sceptical about the concept but it was neither time consuming nor a faff to do. In fact it was fun and it actually reduced the amount of product I used in both the AM & PM.
I am a sensitive skin sufferer and have dehydrated skin and the LIGHT cream was kind on my skin and I can vouch for the barrier / protection element as my skin felt more consistently less dehydrated and bouncy.
I like that the Lamellar System doesn’t depend on a fun and functional way to give you skin what it needs but the leg work has been done to make sure the products are top quality with the best ingredients and are mindful of more sensitive skin types.
One thing that can be slightly daunting is selecting your product and what is right for you. The concept is easy enough to grasp; choose cream then add boosters, but the website is an encyclopaedia of information. I personally enjoyed digesting it all and the selection process, however I recognise this could be overwhelming for someone who isn’t massively familiar with skincare or their needs or has the time to read through everything.
You can do the “quiz” to see what would be best for you here. Give it a go yourself!
What do you think of the concept? Does it sound right for you? Would you give it a go? Let’s chat!
