Are glossy lips coming back in a big way? Maybe, but it’s not the same this time around.
Sticky, thick and gloopy are three buzzwords that spring to mind when I think of glossy lips. It doesn’t really sing #makeupgoals to me. I also live in the UK so 364 days of the year we are blessed with wind meaning my hair drags itself through my lipstick and mascara and I end up eating hair for breakfast. I am one sexy commuter, I tell ya.
Like most 00’s teenagers I had a brief dalliance with Lancome juicy tubes and MAC Lipglass. There is also no denying the sex appeal of fat, juicy lips but still I find myself wiping it off and reaching for a satin or matte lippie.
So, glossy lips were never on my makeup agenda but the new gloss launches are a new texture and are turning sticky, thick and gloopy into slick, sheer and huggable.
Lancome Juicy Shakers are pretty insta-famous right now. How could you not love these adorable silver micro cocktail shakers? Made with an oil/pigment blend that you shake up, each juicy shaker provides a sheer glide of colour on the lips which sits and wears comfortably and dries slowly to a stain effect. I love them because I can forget that I’m wearing a gloss all together. What’s most intriguing is the applicator, a velour cone-shaped sponge that pushes the gloss and pigment onto the lip. It’s so easy and feels so nice you don’t even need a mirror.
Elizabeth Arden sent some gorgeous samples through to me which I wanted to write about for the aesthetic alone. The Prismatic lip gloss collection is part of the summer makeup line and the 3 glosses I have tried are beautiful hyper-sparkle formulations with colour travel pigments. Each has a different base colour; orange, lilac and pink but these only translate onto the lips in a subtle way so I would advise choosing the colour than best matches your skin tone. I love these because like the Juicy Shakers they sit super comfortably in a barely there way but have all teh impact of a thick, glassy and multidimensional gloss.
Another brand that does easy breezy gloss formulations is Clarins. The Instant Light Lip Perfectors are the perfect balance of wet look and stained lips. They wear easy and feel great. I wrote them up on a previous post you can see here.
Is there room in your lip wardrobe for a new gloss?
