In an attempt to reach out and appreciate more drugstore makeup heroes on the blog I’ve been actively trying to test out a few more launches from the high street brands. Enter the latest matte lip launch from Rimmel; The Only 1 Matte Lipstick. A comfort matte formula with high colour payoff and pretty good staying power too. Coming in at £6.99 each or 3 for 2 at Superdrug and Boots right now. Tell me more I hear you say…
Formula & Wear
So I tried out 700 Look Who’s Talking for last nights festive outing. The look on the lips is quite suede-y, not wet or tacky but not the powdery feel some mattes give you either. I went from 1 cocktail party to the next and ended up at the W hotel for the Boohoo Christmas party, it was a late one. I ate about 3 rounds of canapés and more cocktails than I care to remember and I only topped up my lippy once. I’ll can vouch that this Rimmel formula is indeed long-wearing even when food and drink is involved. Also, I completely forgot I had a lipstick on, it was that comfortable. Usually, when I wear a dark lipstick, I am constantly worried about smudging, transferring and dodgy lip lines but I didn’t worry about this once. I’m really impressed.
Packaging & Ergonomics
I have a few niggles with these lipsticks. For 1, the matte red packaging is not very cute. Although a bonus it’s not shiny, I just dont like the casing on these. They don’t feel cheap but the red definitely makes them look cheap-er.
The nib is an annoying round shape which makes a precise application harder. As you can imagine, you can pretty much apply the nude colours blind, upside on a mechanical bull, but with the dark shades I would definitely advise using a liner for a sharper application. As you can see some of my swatches below were a little uneven.
The colour way covers all the bases, your lip but better nudes, through to pretty pinks/coral hues and your darker and more vibrant berry’s, browns and a wild card – neon purple.
700 Trendsetter – A light, brown-toned nude
200 Salute – A slightly pink-toned nude
610 High Flyer – A rosy your lips but better shade
110 Leader of the Pink – A soft candy pink but not garish
120 Call the Shots – A bright reddish toned pinky hue
500 Take the Stage – A postbox red hue, classic pin up girl.
800 Run the Show – A neon purple shade, very on trend
810 The Matte Factor – A rich red hue with a touch of berry
750 Look Who’s Talking: a chocolate brown with cool undertones
My Top 3 Choices
The Rimmel The Only 1 Matte lipsticks are awesome and get a big 8/10 all round from me. The most appealing aspect is how comfortable and long wearing they are in a sea of expensive, drying and flaking matte lipsticks. Can’t really go wrong. Stock up below.
