Winter, yay… The time of the year when my skin gets ravished to fuck after 9 months of working towards something semi-smooth and balanced. I wrote up a little Winter Beauty Essentials post with all the things that got me over the precipice of 2015 and kept my skin in check through ’til spring of 2016 (check that out here). This year I’ve armed myself with these 5 heroes below. Some of them are pretty multifunctional and cover all the bases and do not disappoint.
INDEED BALM 10
The everything balm, newly launched by a skincare brand I’m loving getting to know this year (read more on them here). The 10balm is the do-all, put it everywhere balm that promises protection and repair for irritated, weather beaten, dry skin whilst encouraging cell renew for softer skin. Great for treating the stubborn patches of dryness on the face which I find appear randomly overnight in the winter. Bastard central heating.
You can use it as a lip balm too but I dont think it’s thick enough as a winter lip balm. The 10 special ingredients are: honey extract, propoli extract, pollen extract, royal jelly extract, arnica extract, bisabolol, allantoin, Vitamin E, Buriti Oil, Baobab oil. Although it’s called a balm it’s more like a thick opaque cream, white in colour with absolutely zero scent. It comes in the perfect handbag size. A perfect 10 from me 🙂
ELIZABETH ARDEN 8 HOUR HAND TREATMENT
I have found that people either love or hate the pungent medical smell of Elizabeth Arden’s cult classic 8 hour cream. I have a few friends who find the scent an appealing and comforting character of the 76 year old balm, and have it by their side throughout winter.
If you love the super-long, protective effects of the balm but find it too thick as a hand cream then this is the next best thing! EA have infused the protective goodness of the original 8 hour balm into a hand cream, which promises to moisturise and hydrate hands, you guessed it, up to 8 hours. Why I like it it? It’s probably the least greasy, fastest absorbing hand cream I’ve ever tried and instantly softens hands. I also think the packaging looks super classy and chic.
WELEDA SKIN FOOD
Skin food was born in 1926, is 100% natural and is a saviour for dry, irritated and damaged skin. This is most natural product in this line up and one of my favourites containing Calendula, Rosemary leaf extract, Pansy, Chamomile. I carry a small tube in my bag religiously from the months of November through to March. It is, without a doubt, the most useful and versatile cream I’ve ever used as it’s as intensely hydrating as it is enjoyable to use.
Also a great travel companion in flight, I like to layer it all over my face as a barrier and let my skin suck up the goodness. Cult status for a reason and a feel good beauty hero. A tube of this is really economical costing. You can read a more in depth review of how this saved my desperate skin last year, here.
ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN CLEANSING BALM
When I received a sample of this Elemis cleansing I was told a very impressive fact. This product is the fastest ever selling Elemis product since its launch. Elemis is one of those those sturdy, infallible brands that seamlessly blends science and nature into their really excellent, hardworking and results driven products.
At the end of a cold day in winter my skin positively craves the luxuriousness of this rich thick balm smeared all over my weather beaten, dehydrated skin. It melts away makeup and daily grime and infuses all its plant based goodness (Padina Pavonica, Elderberry Oil, Starflower Oil, Optimega Oil, Mimosa and Rose Flower Waxes) deep into the skin. It’s also highly balancing and I found it didn’t effect the oil production on my face at all, which I know can be a worry for some people when using balm cleansers.
Scoop out a small dollop and massage into the face to remove dirt, grime and makeup and wash off with a warm muslin cloth. You can leave it on for a nourishing mask treatment. It smells so divine (lavender & chamomile) that I often do this when I apply it. My skin glows and I don’t want to use anything else this winter. The price tag is a lil ouch-y (£40 a pot) but it’s a good size tub and I think the product is worth every penny.
I did mention the smell right?
DERMALOGICA PHYTO REPLENISHING OIL
I already wrote about this in my Ultimate Oil Line up last month (read here). You just know if skin gurus, Dermalogica, are going to bring out an oil it would be one of the most well-balanced, high performing oils on the market. Hey, this baby ain’t cheap either but I’ve been using it everyday for 3 months and, at 5 droplets a day, I still haven’t reached the end of the bottle.
It’s super hydrating and absorbs fast and doesn’t mess with makeup. In fact, I’m sure it makes my makeup stay on smoother and more even for longer. It is formulated to help reinforce the skins natural lipid barrier, which is exactly what you want your skincare to do in winter. I wear this in the day and night if I fancy. I just plain love it, folks. This product does contain a little fragrance but it’s very subtle and not overwhelming. I just wanted to flag it incase those sensitive to fragrance skincare were interested. It’s a gem and I’m so glad I found it!
Thoughts on the above? Are you already loving any of these products? What are your winter skin saviours? Let me know below!
