NOSTALGIA & NEWNESS: ISSEY MIYAKE LAUNCHES L’EAU D’ISSEY CITY BLOSSOM

IMG_5526I have not, for a long time, been so eager to try a perfume. When I saw the news bulletin that Issey Miyake was giving their cult 90’s L’eau D’issey a modern and floral twist I was barging down Brook Street to the boutique launch quicker than you can say avant-garde-pleated-kimonos.

Issey Miyake made a name for itself in the early 90’s with their signature fragrance L’eau D’issey. The bottle; tall, conical glass and brushed chrome, is easily recognizable and took pride of place for much of 1992-1995 on my mother’s dresser. I remember spraying it, without her permission and revelling in the cool, watery and clean scent that enveloped me. I felt so sophisticated and now with hindsight it was so androgynous and 90’s. L’eu D’issay the original had that unisex, aquatic and floral freshness to it, like so that many of the classic 90’s scents like CK1, tried to achieve. Almost a no perfume, perfume.

Over 20 years on and I can still feel the way the bottle felt in my hands and who the clean, unique scent clinging to the grey carpets and a white minimalist blinds of my parents bedroom.

IMG_5524-1 IMG_5528L’eau D’issey City blossom is a new limited edition version of the original scent, and although the bottle has an origami design and pink tinge to it I was surprised at how similar it smelt to the original. Although more modern and punchy now, City Blossom is influenced by the deliberate and conceived nature within a city’s walls. The origami theme fits well, almost like nature with a more defined outline, manicured, honed.

The scent is more musky, like it has a more gutsy side to it. The dry down is cedar and amber which is classic and a favorite of mine. The ambrox and pink peppercorn keeps it modern and moreish. More feminine this time round, City blossom still has a fresh and clean aquatic smell like it’s predecessor.

A favorite for spring, City blossom gives me a rush or nostalgia with the newness that spring brings.
