I’m setting off to meet my good friend Emily, she writes for the Daily Mail and I know she won’t mind me saying that she’s sort of weird and awkward and really clever and I always feel stimulated after our get-togethers.
I suggest the Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings for our boozy brunch & catch up as it’s currently on my untapped London brunch list. Three days before they only have space at the bar. Fine with us, closer to the jugs of unlimited Bloody Mary’s (spicy or spicier) and they offer for £15 per person.
The menu starts with traditional english breakfast choices, drop scones, clotted cream and preserves, then turning slightly American with caramelised banana and nuts or streaky bacon and maple syrup options. There’s a variety of poached eggs with..all the classics i.e. Benedict, Florentine and a Mexican inspired option because it’s just sooo trendy these days. We order and get down to throwing back as many unlimited drinks as possible. Emily opts for two dishes as she is unable to decide which she wants. She strikes lucky with the Crispy Potato Hash Served with a fried duck egg or poached hen’s egg and Braised beef, HP hollandaise, crispy shallots (£9). I opt for the faddy Latino inspired poaches eggs; Huevos Benedictos – chorizo, avocado, béarnaise sauce, pico de gallo (£9).
Emily braised beef dish is rich and buttery and immensely satisfying. My eggs are good, as is the hollandaise but I’m a little underwhelmed by another pico de gallo, smashed avo brunch choice. I have food envy. To appease me Emily lets me share her second dish; French toast, maple syrup with berries and clotted cream. Atmosphere
There’s something quite old world, colonial India about this place. Despite the heavily upholstered velvet settees and tassel lamps, the rough wood shutter, white washed walls and tropical palms make me feel like I could be out of England for a couple of hours. There is even a private dining room for parties. The bathrooms are dark, a stark contrast to the light airiness upstairs. The freestanding bath/sink is an interesting design feature.
2 hours later we feel full and tipsy. Another successful brunch and a definite fore runner for my next birthday meal. Who doesn’t love boozy brunch?
