RECIPE: RAW COCOA DATE & HAZELNUT TRUFFLES

IMG_0404Recently I started a bit of a health kick and decide to strip out loads of nasties from my diet, the main evil being refined sugar. Man that shit is bad for you! After 2 weeks of protein hell I’m now starting to add fruits and natural sugars back into my diet. It is easy to forget that chocolate, one of man’s/woman’s greatest creations, derives from the natural and humble origins of the cocoa plant. So it’s basically salad, right?

Anyway, I set out to look for healthy dessert and treats options to try for a natural but healthy sugar fix and found an awesome recipe for Date and Hazelnut Balls aka healthy Chocolate Truffles from The Detox Kitchen. The simplicity of the ingredients may startle you!

Ingredients

  • Makes 8 balls
  • 200g dates, pitted
  • 100g ground almonds
  • 3 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 8 hazelnuts
  • optional: desiccated coconut & vanilla essence

Equipment

  • Equipment required: a high speed blender or Nutribullet

Recipe

Place the dates in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave to stand for 20 minutes until softened. Then drain the dates and place them in a food processor with the ground almonds, cacao powder and sea salt. Blitz until the mixture forms a soft dough. Remove the mixture from the food processor and divide into 8 small pieces. Flatten the first piece in your hand and place the hazelnut in the middle, then roll the mixture around and form a small ball in your hands. Place onto a plate and dust with cacao powder. Repeat this for the remaining balls.

An extra step that I did for this recipe was to roll the truffles in some desiccated coconut – I swear it was like eating a Bounty!
