To be honest guys I was going here just for the name. Farm Girl Cafe inspired some sort of unrealized dream of being a rough and ready country girl with clear skin and long braids who spends her time riding horses across the moors in a plaid shirt and worn Levis.*DEEP BREATH* So yeah, I’m not even thinking about the food at this point, that is until I’m sat down with my menu at 8.30am looking Farm Girl up and down and wondering what to eat.
Farm Girl Cafe is a new Australian cafe that has popped up on Notting Hill’s Portobello road (5 min walk from the tube). It describes itself as “A holistic and healthy, yet comfortingly simple approach to Australian cafe culture”. It’s run buy IRL couple; Rose who spent time growing up on a dairy farm in Australia and her partner who from the Swiss alps. That’s pretty darn rustic! Farm Girl is situated in a white washed brick, walled courtyard slap bang on the Portobello Road. It doesn’t look new by any means. More like a café, decades old, that has settled into a familiar groove with its regulars. it’s home for sure. The cafe is totally unpretentious as well, the opposite to many of the wave of conceited and faux rustic coffee shops we see popping up these days.
When paying for food in a restaurant taste comes first, health 2nd. Luckily Farm Girl’s menu balances the two perfectly and have some interesting takes on classic’s like the Coconut BLT: Coconut bacon, sliced beef tomatoes, guacamole & homemade cashew cream or the Berry Pancakes: Benoit’s homemade buckwheat mix, with amber maple syrup, fresh berries & coconut shavings. And YES there is Avo Toast as well… It’s a menu that Madeline Shaw and Deliciously Ella would be proud of.
I opted for the Acai Bowl not just because it is literally the most instagrammable dish I’ve ever seen but because I’ve wanted to sample its fruity and cooling delights for ages. I can now vouch that it is as tasty as it look (pre spoon attack). I topped mine with Hemp protein and granola too. My dining partner had the classic Avo toast ( I think we can consider it a classic now?) which came with pomegranate seeds. She drank a Green tea and I had a Long black.
I wish there was a Farm Girl nearer me as I could see this being the most amazing local cafe to sit for hours and wile away the day, writing and drinking coffee whilst snacking on nurturing, delicious goodness. My one complaint, the cafe itself could do with a white wall or two to brighten things up but maybe that’s me just being a clichéd blogger? We do love our white surfaces after all but I’ll leave it because Farm Girl has just introduced me to my newest breakfast obsession. I’m off to google Acai bowl recipes…
Did I mention it’s doggy friendly too 🙂
